Copenhagen Christmas Tree Transport by Bike

Update: 18 Dec 2013 Lulu and I were on the spot when one of her teachers, Heidi, was buying her tree and taking it home. She borrowed one of the many bike trailers at the school to do so. Standing nice and tall in the Copenhagen evening. UPDATE. Typical. Write a blog post and then two bikes with christmas trees roll past your window. So here's an update. Above: Sorte Jernhest cargo bike , complete with tree and kid wearing an elf hat heading home in the evening. Fantastic. This lady rolled past my window pulling her tree on a trailer. Getting close to Jul here in Copenhagen. Christmas tree sellers are occupying squares all around the city. Many people use their bicycles to get the tree home. Here's a collection of the shots we have of people moving their trees home by bike. This lady had just bought a jule tree and the seller was helping her strap it to her bicycle. It took some work and discussion but they finally succeeded. She didn't have far to go, s...

Getting Carried Away

Been busy lately. Running behind with articles but doing lots of great projects with Copenhagenize Consulting. I figured I'd post some of the photos I've taken recently. Citizen Cyclists carrying stuff around is the theme. Shoes and a suitcase. Suitcase and a group of friends on a stag night by bicycle. Two cargo bikes filled with beer. New frame heading home. Kids' bicycles in transit. That's me and Lulu-Sophia on the right, taking her new (used) bike home. Transporting a guitar by trailier in Copenhagen and a trailer by trailer in Strasbourg. The City of Zagreb has a respectable fleet of cargo bikes for cleaning the streets. As well as for bakery deliveries. Cool wooden crate in Copenhagen. Cool Danish Ambassador to Croatia, and his wife, on a Christiania Bike in Zagreb. Muffins on the move.

World's Most Northernly Cargo Bike and Bike Lane

A friend of mine took this photo back in 2011 in  Nanortalik , Greenland of a citizen on his Christiania cargo bike . It was only a balmy -10 C at the time but getting around the town is easy peasy on human-powered wheels. Greenland is an area we haven't covered much here on this blog. We've noticed that many Danish online bike shops are keen to point out that they send to Greenland. Being a part of the Danish Kingdom , it's no surprise that bicycles play a role in Greenland. Seeing an iconic Christiania Bike 'up there' is just extra cool. So I was wondering. Could this be the world's most northerly cargo bike? The coordinates for Nanotalik are 60°08′31″N - 45°14′36″W. It probably isn't, as Nanotalik (meaning 'Place of the Polar Bears' in Kalaallisut) is on the southern tip of Greenland, which means cargo bikes in Uppsala, Sweden, just north of Stockholm are farther north. Not to mention other Swedish, Icelandic and Norwegian towns. I started ...

Happy Campers

Thanks to one of our readers, we've made the acquaintance of this Camper Bicycle. It's the work of the artist Kevin Cyr . "Camper Bike, a functioning sculptural piece, built in April 2008. A stand alone piece and the subject of a series of paintings." Brilliant stuff. And why not? After I read about it I figured I'd google 'camper bike' to see if anything else was out there apart from an artist's sculptural piece. I shouldn't have done it... here goes: The Campercycle . Arcturus Campercycle Project Bicycle Camper . The Bikamper . Or we can go old school with a classic European delivery bike. When I was visiting Amsterdam back in May, I needed a nap after riding around with Marc from Amsterdamize [hungover - had to teach him a Danish drinking lesson] so what better than Henry's big delivery bicycle outside of his Workcycles Shop . Wouldn't take much to slap a cover over the top or even just pitch a tent right on the cargo bay. These big-ars...

Saturday Morning Ride to IKEA on the Cargo Bike

One of life's necessary evils is a trip to Cheaptown - aka IKEA. Like everywhere else on the planet, IKEAs in Copenhagen are located in big box areas outside of the city. There are two within 10 km of our flat and I headed out to one of them to buy some boxes for my son's room. He has 15 kg of LEGO and when we redid his room we figured some stackable shoe boxes on the wall would be great for the LEGO. If we need some bigger things from IKEA, we will usually grab a car from our car share programme . But on a Saturday morning I hopped on the Bullitt cargo bike and headed off to get the boy his boxes. As you've probably gathered by now, there are separated bike lanes basically anywhere you want to go in Copenhagen. Even places you DON'T want to go, like IKEA. Here's a little photo series of my Tour de IKEA 2009. In the above photo an onramp leads to one of the main motorways into/out of Copenhagen. The bike lane I'm on continues down under the ramp, while the cars...
